This course will provide skills and ideas for solving real-world formulation problems, which can be applied by experienced cosmetic formulators. Not a course for beginners, Optimization for Cosmetics focuses on providing information that will allow formulators to tackle old problems with fresh ideas and enabling participants to raise their game in terms of their own personal development as well as benefitting whichever company they work for.

Since this course is geared towards the experienced formulator, it is assumed that the formulator is already aware of the challenges faced in getting the right “feel” to a product, producing stable emulsions, has a background in delivery and understands the relationship between formulating for a claim while still meeting regulatory guidelines. Each lesson in this course offers fresh ideas that will allow the formulator to approach these challenges in new ways that should produce better results faster and with less effort. The skills presented here are some that the typical formulator may not be familiar with, and will be extremely valuable to those who wish to progress beyond the bench.

Lesson 1: Optimizing for Feel
Taking a fresh look at skin feel reveals new ideas that have been missing from standard discussions. This lesson uncovers how we can formulate scientifically for feel and why we would want to do so by challenging the idea that it cannot be optimized scientifically. We explore the science of feel, ways to measure parameters that affect feel, and suggest experiments that will allow you find parameters that correlate.
Lesson 2: Optimizing for Stability
A new understanding of emulsifiers allows you to formulate them with precision to control emulsion formulation. You will use HLD—a new tool for finding your way through emulsifier space—and learn how to perform precision formulation with HLD-NAC. All of this is brought to life with free software that can be used to help you with all the necessary calculations.
Lesson 3: Optimizing for Delivery
Discover a new way for the cosmetic formulator to master the complexities of getting an active into the skin. This lesson describes a “solubility” approach that allows you to formulate for skin delivery with greater accuracy and insight. You will also learn how to tune the “finite dose” we apply to the skin so that its changes over time can help, rather than hinder, delivery.
Lesson 4: Optimizing for Trials
Learn the essentials for a trial backed up by hands-on statistics. In this lesson, you will discover the basics of a clinical trial including protocols, placebos, ethics and the difference between passive and active trials. The lesson then continues with a discussion of how to analyze trial results and the best way to use statistics to plan a trial and interpret the results.
Lesson 5: Optimizing for Claims
Explore the role of the cosmetic scientist in making and defending the best possible marketing claim for a new product, and avoiding embarrassing and costly retractions of claims that go too far. Get an in-depth look at claims—what makes a claim good or bad, the claims system and your responsibilities. You will work through a claim example and learn what we can and cannot claim for our new product and how to go about proving our case.
